Metallurgy for Jewelers
Why does one 14K casting come out bright and dense while another shows porosity, cracking, or a color that's just a little off? The answers live in the metal itself. This talk takes a practical look at the science behind the materials jewelers work with every day, from how alloying elements shape the color, hardness, and workability of gold to why platinum behaves so differently during casting and at the bench.
We'll cover how master alloys are formulated and karated, what happens to metal during melting and remelting, the root causes of common casting defects, and how heat treatment and processes like hot isostatic pressing change a piece from the inside out. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of why metals behave the way they do, and practical ways to use that knowledge to make better decisions about alloy selection, fabrication, and quality.
Whether you're a bench jeweler, designer, or caster, this session is built to be accessible to everyone and useful the next day in the studio.
